5 Shocking Facts about Cyber Crime and UK Business from a report by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

  • Around a third (32%) of businesses and two in ten charities (22%) report having cyber security breaches or attacks in the last 12 months. As in previous years, this is much higher specifically among medium businesses (60%), large businesses (61%) and high-income charities (52%)..

  • Among the 32 per cent of businesses recording breaches or attacks, this resulted in a negative outcome, such as a loss of data or assets, In businesses that had these kinds of negative outcomes, the average (mean) cost to the business was £4,180 in 2019. This is higher than in 2018 (£3,160) and 2017 (£2,450).

  • Just under three in ten businesses (27%) and charities (29%) report that staff have attended internal or external training, including seminars or conferences on cyber security in the previous 12 months.

  • Businesses that hold personal data are more likely than average to have experienced breaches or attacks (39%, vs. 32% overall), highlighting the importance of protecting this information.

  • Of the 637 businesses that identified a breach or attack on the last 12 months, 80% were fraudulent emails or being directed to fraudulent websites.
